Koorana Education Support Centre students took part in a swimming carnival at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre last Thursday, which saw lots of smiles and personal bests.
Koorana competed against students from other education support centres throughout the region and students had fun taking part in the friendly competition.
Education assistant Lisa Thomas said the school regularly participated in activities, such as the swimming carnival which offered the students a chance to learn about sportsmanship and making new friends.
‘‘Koorana has been involved in inter school activities for a number of years’’ she said.
‘‘We have a beach carnival usually in term one with other education support centres in the area from Rockingham, Leda to Mandurah, a sports carnival and the swimming carnival and we have a choir made up from six education support centres too.
‘‘The events are all about team work, having fun, have a risk in a safe supportive environment, trying new things, being a good sport.’’
Mrs Thomas said the students loved the chance to get out of the normal school environment and exercise with their friends.
‘‘The kids love going to these events for a number of reasons,’’ she said.
‘‘They enjoy outdoor fun, travelling to events is always exciting.
‘‘Also we encourage all the kids to be active and these events encourage them to do so.’’
