For Baldivis resident Ted Blackshaw fitness isn’t a chore, it’s away of life.
Mr Blackshaw won the Businessperson of the Year award at the Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce Regional Small Business Awards recently for his work building Baldivis Health and Fitness and although he works every day helping to build the health and wellbeing of his clients he said he had never tired of it.
‘‘It’s the passion of doing it,’’ he said.
‘‘I enjoy doing it, I enjoy teaching and seeing the results from people when they finish and their posture’s improved, that they’ve lost weight, or they gained weight, because it’s not all about people losing weight.
‘‘Some people have injuries with knees, back, shoulders and it’s rehabilitation with that and using the muscle groups that get it back inline.’’
Mr Blackshaw’s career started in the United Kingdom where he worked in the military building the fitness of an entire regiment.
‘‘I was in the army physical training corps so I looked after the fitness of a regiment with maybe 2000 people in it,’’ he said.
‘‘We looked after their fitness, whether it was boxing, whether it was battle PT which is with medical balls and poles.
‘‘Everything from rugby to football we looked after everything to do with general fitness that the soldiers wanted to do.’’
Mr Blackshaw originally joined the army at 15 as his father was already in the military and his brothers followed suit.
‘‘We travelled the whole world, ’’ he said.
‘‘We lived in Hong Kong, Cyprus and the Middle East, so we grew up in the forces as well.
‘‘All my family went in, all my brothers went in as well and they’ve all been in and done it, Northern Ireland, the Gulf War or Argentina.’’
Although Mr Blackshaw has built his career around fitness he said he was not always that way inclined and had learned over the years the ways to make training work for him.
‘‘When I was at school I hated fitness and I was over-weight at 15 and then I joined the army and I just went of from there,’’ he said.
‘‘I competed with the army team at Judo and I used to box and play basketball.
‘‘I just tend to keep my fitness the same and train everyday, do something everyday, just to keep the fitness going because if you let go of it, it’s hard to catch up.‘‘ It’s like a roller coaster, up and down all the time.’’
