Young musicians took to the stage at Rockingham foreshore on Friday as part of the Youth Advisory Council’s Youth Jam series.
Running monthly this summer, the series showcases some of the best young talent from the Rockingham area.
Five aspiring stars treated an audience of beach-goers to a selection of hits from artists such as Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars and Beyonce.
City of Rockingham Youth Community Development officer Ellie Cooksley said the performances at the foreshore’s Peace Pavilion was designed to showcase local talent and give young people the opportunity to perform in front of an audience.
“Rockingham Beach pupil Alex Veleva, 12, sang a number of songs from her favourite artist, Taylor Swift.
The 12-year-old’s mum Maria Veleva said her daughter had always enjoyed singing and was looking forward to attending John Curtin College of the Arts next year as part of the talented and gifted program.
“Alex wants to be an actor and a singer, we are very proud of her,”she said.
Year 12 student Bojesse James impressed the gathered crowd with an original song inspired by his baby sister.
The 16-year-old, who attends Safety Bay Football Academy, successfully auditioned for Channel 7’s X Factor recently.
Young singers Michelle Gorman and Sefili Marsters also appeared on stage.
Head of Youth Advisory Council Music Committee Rebecca Ffoulkes said everyone was proud of the performers.
“We think it’s important for young people to have a chance to perform,” she said.“By putting on events like this, it helps young musicians grow their confidence and gives them a chance to perform at a real gig.”
