Irrigation systems fried during storms

Irrigation systems have been fried in up to 20 of the City of Rockingham’s parks and reserves, due to inclement weather late last month.

Thunderstorms and repeated lightning strikes have caused ongoing issues with up to 20 of the City of Rockingham’s parks and reserves irrigation systems.

Mayor Barry Sammels said irrigation systems could act as lightning rods.

‘‘The reticulation controllers and wiring can act like antennae and when struck by lightning they provide a network for the electricity to travel through, which has damaged some watering systems,’’ he said.

‘‘Some systems require significant repair works to irrigation controllers and pumping systems. People can expect to see interrupted watering schedules in several local parks and reserves, which could impact turf and plants during the current hot spell.’’

Cr Sammels said electrical and irrigation contractors were working hard to repair and replace damaged components and affected irrigation systems would be operational as soon as possible.
