Debut novel aims to expose truth
Karratha’s Alana Munro has realised a life-long dream of being an author with the release of her first novel.
Women Behaving Badly, which promises to expose the truth about female friendship, is now available for digital download from Amazon with hard copy release set for June.
The mother of three said she had always been an avid writer, but after having her third child she felt the time was right to tell some of her stories.
“I wanted to share my own life experiences,” she said.
“So I decided to ignore a lot of the house work and put aside two hours a day (when our baby was sleeping and the kids were at school) to write my first book.
“It was wonderful to let all my creative juices flow (and) it was a nice escape from the endless washing pile.”
Munro said the book was about how “cruel and manipulative” women could be to and about other women.
“Not all women are bad friends, but there is enough negative and passive aggressive behaviours to warrant a book,” she said.
“The book takes us through the common negative behaviours that some women inflict on each other, such as jealously, competition, intensity, bitching and power games.
“It gives the reader many examples of bad friend behaviour to watch out for (and) seeks to give the reader the knowledge to only allow healthy, positive girlfriends into their life.”
Munro said she hoped to share some of her learned knowledge to help women to protect themselves.
“I wanted to start the awkward conversation that many women deny, the myth that all females adore their girlfriends,” she said.
“I had seen too much evidence to contradict this rosy myth of sisterhood.
“Some women are not loyal or supportive sisters to each other, in fact some women seek to hurt other women and the bitching doesn’t stop after the school years, if anything it heats up.
“I felt it was time to acknowledge that sometimes women can be incredibly nasty and unfair on other women.”
Scotland-born Munro said every page was based on personal experiences of being bullied, gossiped about, personally sabotaged and more.
“It isn’t a book from a therapist studying her clients, this book is from my own deeply personal reality,” she said.
“Each chapter ends with often harrowing tales of what has personally happened to me or someone I know in my life.”
