Kununurra residents have joined thousands of shoppers across Australia in being able to scan and pay for their own shopping at self-serve checkouts.
Coles Kununurra had 10 selfserve stations installed last Wednesday, six of which feature both cash and card payment facilities.
The other four are pay-by-card only.
Store manager Matt Pawelski said the majority of stores in Australia had the devices and the Kununurra installation had been planned for a few months.
“It’s really just about gaining efficiency and making it better for the customer,” he said.
“A lot of the customers up here have used them before, so it’s been good.”
Mr Pawelski dismissed suggestions the new checkouts would lead to an increase in thefts. “I think if someone plans to be a thief, they are going to be a thief,” he said.
“(The transition to self-serve checkouts) has been very smooth for the first week of use.
“There has been some good feedback and some bad.
“Some (people) think it is going to take jobs away from the community but, rest assured, it doesn’t take any. It actually creates work.”
