The Wyndham Crocodiles Football Club has recruited a fitness coach in a bid to win their first East Kimberley Football League premiership in 10 years.
The upcoming season marks a decade since the Crocs last took home the grand final trophy and vice-coach Derek Gallagher is making sure the standard of fitness is high by hiring trainer Rebecca Minichilli.
Gallagher said the Crocs have been edging closer to a win over the past few years, and he believes 2012 is their year.
“This year is our 10th anniversary since our last win,” he said.
“We must win a grand final this year.”
The Crocs were knocked out by Waringarri Crows in the first round of the elimination finals in 2011.
After a scratch match this Friday in Kununurra, the Wyndham team will play its first game of the season against the Warmun Eagles.
After devastating floods which led the Warmun team to be evacuated from their community last year, Gallagher thinks the team will be a force to be reckoned with in 2012.
“They will come out firing as they had a bad season due to the floods, but we will be ready.”
Round 1 of the EKFL 2012 season starts on March 30 when the Kununurra Demons take on last year’s premiers, the Ord River Magpies, in Kununurra.
On March 31, the Wirrimanu Tigers will play the Kundat Djaru Cats in Halls Creek and the Waringarri Crows will travel to Timber Creek to play the Lions. On the same day, the Halls Creek Hawks will play a home game against the Kururrungku Roos.
