Broome could play host to an Olympic-distance triathlon in coming years after a successful recent practice run by the Broome Tri Club.

The club runs the successful Cable Beach Triathlon each year but president Steve Graham said it was hoped a longer, Olympic-distance event could also be hosted further down the track.

“The long-term aim is definitely to run an Olympicdistance triathlon in Broome and I think this was a good test to see if we could do that … I think overall it was a great success,” he said.

“Compared to other Olympic distance triathlons I think the course is as good as any.” The “Broosa” triathlon, named after the recent Noosa triathlon in Queensland, was run on November 5 with 19 club members taking to the start line of the handicap event.

The event incorporated a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run with competitors having to estimate the time it would take them to complete the course.

Competitors then started at different times with the aim of having everyone finish together at 6pm.

Graham said the average time for competitors was two hours and 40 minutes.

James Boggan finished closest to his estimated time, Oskar Booth was the man who finished closest to 6pm and Katy Duffield the woman who finished closest to 6pm.
