Television crew thrills town

Digby Fennell, 6, with Edwina Bartholomew after they rode in to read the weather on his quad bike.

A lucky Kununurra family shared breakfast with thousands of Australians last week when television program Sunrise broadcast its weather live from their property.

Brian and Jo Fennell, of Kimberley Ornamental Stone Craft, were featured on the breakfast program as part of the new “Brekky Crashers” segment.

In between reading the weather each half-hour, presenter Edwina Bartholomew chatted to the Fennells, their three children, gallery workers and other Kununurra residents.

The Fennells have lived in Kununurra for 16 years and live onsite at Stone Craft, where they display and sell stone art and handcrafted jewellery.

“Our neighbour actually sent (Sunrise) an email on our behalf and they contacted us and asked if we would like to do it,” Mrs Fennell said.

“They saw our neighbourhood, they chatted to everybody, they saw our workshop and all of us sitting around the campfire.”

About 30 people braved the cold 3.30am start due to the time difference with the East Coast to get their faces on TV.

Segments included sitting around the campfire, riding on a quad bike, cooking the gallery’s famous black forest cake and cutting and polishing some of the region’s well-known zebra rock.

“I’m not sure the kids slept much last night, they were pretty excited,” Mrs Fennell said.

The gallery, also known for offering morning and afternoon tea with a selection of homemade cakes and coffee, also drew the praise of Bartholomew for its famous

mango smoothie.

The Sunrise weather team travelled to Home Valley Station to broadcast the following day before finishing at the Argyle Diamond Mine on Friday.
