Detectives wish to speak to a man who called for an ambulance before the public attempted to render assistance to a 64-year-old man found dead in a public toilet block on Stirling Terrace on Tuesday afternoon.

Police were called to the Albany Rest Centre at the corner of York Street and Stirling Terrace at 1.45pm after a backpacker discovered the body inside a toilet cubicle.

The man, who is believed to be from Albany, is yet to be formally identified.

The death is no longer being treated as suspicious.

Police including Albany detectives and forensic officers cordoned off the area from the public on Tuesday afternoon.

Detectives on Tuesday also urged the driver of a white Nissan Navara utility who they believe was in the toilet block during the afternoon to come forward.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Todd White urged anyone in the area at the time to contact Crime Stoppers.

“At this stage we are investigating it as we would any death and we are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.”

The man who phoned the ambulance or anyone who utilised the toilets shortly before the time of the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
