Wahoo notches surprising win

Division 1 skipper Greg Westerberg managed to stay aboard Wahoo throughout last week’s harbour course race to record an unexpected win last Saturday.

Wahoo won the start but was soon gobbled up by the big boys as they sailed to the first windward mark.

Westerberg caught up on the spinnaker runs to be right up among the leading yachts.

In the latter stages the breeze had dropped to a gentle 5 knots, which certainly did not help Wahoo as she wallowed on the final leg.

But Westerberg had done enough earlier to clinch a narrow victory.

Second place was taken by Brett Hawker in his trusty old Eurythmic, who had an interesting race when the breeze dropped out, sailing on to just miss out by 20 seconds.

Third and fastest time was taken by Sitting Bull, skippered by Henk Olde who has taken over the tiller while Muray Howson is overseas.

Division 2 sailed a harbour course event and it was a case of who could catch Murray Deere in Run To Paradise.

Deere was not seriously challenged after going into the lead but he had to finish by a huge margin to feature in the placings.

Ian Howard had Grey Moose moving well on several legs and was able to shadow Deere, finishing within three minutes and winning on handicap with two minutes to spare.

Second was Footloose skippered by Bob Giles.

Third was Stephen Brown in Mary Maitland who tried everything in the book to bridge the gap to the bigger boats.

Lasers sailed for the first time in three weeks and Peron Pearse in Illegal proved too good for Kieran Murnane in Swift and Nathaniel Brough in Pressure Pack.

The young sailors spend an enormous time on the water in school holidays and their skills are showing. Pearse was first and fastest, Murnane was second and Brough failed to finish.
