Students at John Paul College had a short break from classes yesterday morning for the school’s annual Ash Wednesday service.
Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, a 40-day period during which Christians set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ – his suffering, sacrifice, life, death, burial and resurrection.
Lent culminates in Easter, or Resurrection Sunday.
Staff members and pupils gathered in the school’s newly developed McManus Centre for the liturgy, conducted by Father Daniel Boyd from St Mary’s Parish.
The ashes, once blessed, were distributed by the Year 12 student representative council.
