Beating the summer heat while also gaining important life skills is a winning combination for all ages.
That’s the aim of the VacSwim program, which is beginning its second series this week at the Goldfields Oasis Recreation Centre.
The program caters for children aged five years and up, as well as offering bronze medallion courses for older swimmers.
The successful first series ran for eight days from January 2, and there have been more than 100 children enrolled in Kalgoorlie-Boulder this summer.
Centre supervisor for VacSwim Fiona O’Donnell, who has been involved with the program for 10 years, said the skills taught by the program were vital.
“(VacSwim) teaches skills for life,” she said. “We try to say to young children it’s about being familiar with water. The program we do, we also run it with school children for in-term swimming.”
