For Kalgoorlie City Football Club ruckman and recently crowned Mitchell medallist Alex Stewart, the opportunity for a change in both his football and personal life was the driving force behind his move to the Goldfields.
Originally from Margaret River, the 25-year-old said the personal loss which came from last year’s bushfires, coupled with being dropped from Augusta-Margaret River’s league premiership team, was enough for him to head inland at the beginning of 2012.
“Our family home burnt down in the fires in Margs (Margaret River) and I had a bit of a rough year last year, ” Stewart said.
“I played league for most of the year and was dropped the week before the finals.
“I ended up playing for the reserves in the grand final. I needed a change to be honest.“It was a bit depressing being at home towards the end of last year and one of my good mates (Tom Betlehem) who is doing uni and engineering out here, offered me the chance to come up."
