The likely introduction of a special salary cap from next season emerged as one of the key issues from Monday night’s annual forum conducted by the Goldfields Football League.
League media officer Hugh Gallagher, a former long-serving GFL chairman, said “intent” to introduce the system for the 2013 campaign, based on the key components of various models, would make for a more even competition.
“The reason is two-fold, ” Gallagher said.
“To keep clubs viable because some, and we’re not singling out anyone, tend to go overboard on spending for players.
“It would also keep the GFL system intact – one that is relatively equitable so clubs are managed as best they possibly can be.”
Gallagher said a perfect hypothetical would be in the case of a wealthy team official or member throwing thousands of dollars at players to sign with a particular club.'The West Australian' is a trademark of West Australian Newspapers Limited 2012.
