Former Kambalda swimmer Kacey O’Connell is eyeing off the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro as the teenager dreams of becoming Australia’s next “Madam Butterfly”.

Born in Kalgoorlie, O’Connell took up swimming at age seven in Kambalda before moving to Perth after her 10th birthday.

The 18-year-old has since won a scholarship to the WA Institute of Sport and will compete at the 2012 London Olympic trials in Adelaide next month.

“I’m not getting my hopes up for these Olympic trials, but I’d like to make an open final if I can which means finishing in the top eight,” O’Connell said.

“I am working hard towards making the next Commonwealth Games in two years’ time and hopefully after that the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

“I’ve been training really hard – I’ve just got to keep growing and get stronger which comes with age.”
