Cup stands on its own

The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club has moved a step closer to securing the Kalgoorlie Cup’s future as a stand-alone event after announcing the meeting will again be staged without a conflicting metropolitan program this year.

The Cup was awarded stand-alone status last September in what proved a major financial windfall for the club’s Race Round showcase.

On-course betting turnover rose 16.5 per cent on 2010 figures, while its off-course equivalent was up a staggering 62 per cent to just under $2 million.

That success has prompted Perth Racing to again schedule its Belmont Park meeting to a day after the Kalgoorlie Cup, paving the way for what could become a permanent arrangement in the future.

“As it currently stands, RWWA have released the dates and the status quo remains the same as last year,” newly re-elected KBRC chairman Steve Young said.
