The State Government will retain ownership of the Goldfields Arts Centre but it will be managed by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, if the Liberals win the State Election on March 9.

Arts and Culture Minister John Day was in Kalgoorlie-Boulder yesterday and announced a Liberal Government would provide $5 million for urgent upgrades and repairs to the GAC.

Mr Day said the Liberals would also commit to annual funding of $300,000 for four years, designed to cover the shortfall of operating costs.

But the announcement effectively means the future of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s main arts facility rests on the outcome of the State Election, with WA Labor yet to reveal its solution to the ownership problem under a Mark McGowan Government.

The GAC problem has been forced on politicians after Curtin University last year announced it would not manage the centre because it was not a core operation of the university.
