Rock bolts could be installed at Twilight Cove and Hellfire under new measures announced by Premier Colin Barnett to help protect people fishing off rocks.
The move follows four drownings by rock fishermen along the Esperance coast over the past 12 months, with two of them occurring at Twilight Cove.
Mr Barnett said the Liberal Government would provide $300,000 over three years to improve safety at popular locations along the coast if it wins the March 9 election.
The first works are expected to be installed by this Easter.
“Since 2007, there have been 13 rock fishing-related deaths recorded in Western Australia and it is clear more can be done to protect fishers,” Mr Barnett said.“The Government will engage with Recfishwest, the Surf Live Saving Association of WA, local government and communities to identify specific areas of concern, discuss the most effective action that can be taken, and how this is best done.”
