Handling snakes and playing with fire was all in a day’s work for Goldfields Baptist College student Alicia Burt when she attended a three-day “science experience” at Edith Cowan University’s Joondalup campus.
The Science Experience attracted budding scientists aged between 13 and 16 from across the Perth metropolitan area to as far as Toodyay and Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
University students, researchers and staff were joined by visiting science educators to guide students through a series of interactive workshops and lectures based on science courses on offer at the university.
Students experimented with fire and electricity, made fossil models and healthy pancakes, sampled their own DNA and attended lectures on astronomy, psychology, sports science and engineering.
Ms Burt, 15, said she enjoyed all kinds of science.“My favourite activity was getting to hold snakes,” she said.
