People requiring drug and alcohol detoxification services are being flown to Perth or interstate as the city’s only rehabilitation service struggles to cope with demand.
As part of the Goldfields Rehabilitation Service’s rehabilitation program clients need to undergo a period of intensive drug and alcohol detoxification.
There are only two beds available at the Kalgoorlie Hospital for GRS clients needing detox, according to GRS manager Jane Fajardo.
“But these beds are open solely to clients who have another illness or medical disorder in addition to the addiction, ” she said.
“This means if they (clients) do not have a mental illness, they cannot do detox at the hospital and sometimes they are flown to Perth.”
“I acknowledge the support of the hospital, but it is not their core business.Ms Fajardo said at any one time there were between 16 and 20 people on the rehabilitation waiting list.
