Baby boy city's first for the year

A New Year has brought with it new life and joy for one happy family.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s first birth for 2013 arrived at 6.09am yesterday.

Thomas Grant Smith was delivered at Kalgoorlie Hospital at a healthy weight of 4270g and a height of 56cm.

His parents Catherine and Grant Smith said they were overjoyed to welcome their first child into the family.

Thomas shares his January 2 birthday with actor Cuba Gooding Jr and Skyhooks singer Graham Strachan.

The celebration of the first arrivals for the year has a long tradition dating back to 600 BC, when the ancient Greeks would symbolise the rebirth of the New Year by carrying a baby in a basket to honour the God Dionysus.
