A man who allegedly beat a woman with an iron bar as she tried to run away from him was refused bail this week.

Robert Freddrick Gilbert, 23, appeared in the Kalgoorlie Magistrate’s Court charged with aggravated unlawful assault.

Mr Gilbert did not enter a plea to the charge.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Carey Owen said the alleged assault happened on February 3 in Nambi Village near Leonora.

The court heard Mr Gilbert allegedly hit the woman on her left foot with the bar before hitting her across the back with it as she tried to run away.

The victim’s left foot had been broken a few days earlier and Sgt Owen said Mr Gilbert was aware of this when he allegedly hit her.
