A heart attack prevention drug will be listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme at a cost of $100 million over five years.

The drug, Ticagrelor (trading as Brilinta), is used to treat myocardial infarction or unstable angina and can prevent heart attacks and blood clots.

The Federal Government also said other drugs to treat leukaemia, juvenile arthritis and high blood pressure are expected to be added to the PBS list in coming months.

The Government will increase the price of 17 medicines now on the PBS, following a recommendation by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Pricing Authority.
