A Kalgoorlie jury will today deliberate its verdict in the trial of a Boulder footballer accused of striking his opponent during a Goldfields Football League game.

Boulder City footballer Mathew Lee Wellstead, 38, has pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Gabriel James Orr, 23, who was playing for Mines Rovers, during a night game on April 20.

The jury has heard evidence from Mr Wellstead, Mr Orr, fellow players and spectators during the last three days in the Kalgoorlie District Court.

Mr Wellstead has denied punching Mr Orr, saying both players were contesting the ball and he had pushed him.

Yesterday, State prosecutor Ian Marshall, in his closing address, accused Mr Wellstead of lying and “pulling the wool over the eyes” of the jury.

He said the central issue of the case was how Mr Orr became unconscious and suffered two jaw fractures during the game.
