More than 1000 Goldfields residents flocked to Centennial Park yesterday to celebrate Australia Day.

The park was filled with people kept happy with a barbecue breakfast provided by the city’s three Rotary Clubs and entertained by local artists performing Australian music.

Deputy Mayor Allan Pendal was in charge of proceedings and handing out the Australia Day awards.

“It has been a terrific turnout; you never know how many people you will get, people do have a lot of other commitments,” he said.

“This year we brought it forward by half an hour to try to keep it out of the heat of the day.”

The Australia Day awards are presented annually by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to recognise groups and individuals who have made a significant contribution to the community.
