Top Deck drivers relive touring past

Twelve weeks, 22 passengers and one brave bus driver, that’s how many young adventurers experienced Europe in the 1970s – on a Top Deck bus tour.

Yesterday 11 former drivers rolled into Kalgoorlie-Boulder in a genuine double decker tour bus called Robbie.

It was recently renamed in honour of their mate and fellow driver Robbie Goodall who passed away from cancer a few weeks ago.

The intrepid crew are en route from Sydney to Perth to deliver the bus ready for a nostalgic return trip which will be filmed for a documentary and will end at a reunion for the old drivers.

Another bus is retracing the route the drivers used to take from London to Kathmandu.

“It was a party atmosphere on the bus, but as young drivers in our 20s we also had the responsibility to look after our passengers,” Mick “Carrot” Carroll, a former driver and director of Top Deck, said.
