Geraldton's new resident magistrate says he wants to help people better understand the judicial system and the importance of courts in the community.
Geoff Lawrence, who has been in the city for just over a month, said there was far more to courts than simply punishing people.
“It’s not just about court proceedings, it's about all sorts of things, births, licences, residential tenancy matters, ways people can get help in a whole range of matters,” he said.
“Courts perform a crucial function in the community, and I hope to get that message across through visiting schools and talking to students.”
The Geraldton posting is Mr Lawrence's first as a resident magistrate, and he hopes to develop what he calls “restorative justice” by using various approaches to sentencing.
