More short-term accommodation is needed in the CBD, according to Geraldton Visitor Centre co-ordinator Ron Hayward.
“Visitors prefer generally to stay in the CBD and near/on the waterfront, so we could safely say that we are underdeveloped in this area,” he said.
“Projects in this area generally are more upmarket, which has the effect of pricing them out of the average holiday-making family.”
Mr Hayward said the upper-end of the Geraldton accommodation market was reasonably well catered for, but additions in the same class as All Seasons and Best Western would be useful.
He added quality self-contained accommodation, such as Ocean West, was in short supply.
Mr Hayward said in peak seasons such as Christmas, Easter and wildflower season, demand for accommodation was very high.
“On the odd occasion we have not had adequate accommodation to fill the demand,” he said.
“We cater for overflow campers and caravans well enough at Woorree during peak times, but good quality accommodation in these times can be scarce.”
Mr Hayward said overall Geraldton had a good range of accommodation that catered for most budgets.
Numerous accommodation projects are currently in the pipeline for Geraldton.
Those include the development of the Back Beach Caravan Park and the proposed $50 million Geraldton Airport Hotel.
City of Greater Geraldton treasury and finance director Bob Davis said the Back Beach Caravan Park development was anticipated to commence during 2012-13.
Mr Davis said there was mixed commercial development envisaged on the PTA land holding on Marine Tce, opposite the Courthouse and Police complex, and at the Batavia Coast Marina Stage 2.
