A fall during trackwork on Saturday could not stop jockey Joseph Azzopardi from riding Mr Solitary to victory in yesterday’s Geoff McPherson Memorial (1420m).
Mr Solitary and Azzopardi led from the gates in the day’s feature race at a slow speed as the field of seven made their way down the back of the Geraldton Turf Club course.
Due to the slow speed, sentimental favourite Classic Knowledge rounded the field and took off from the 1000m mark.
The Garry McPherson-trained horse opened a lead of four lengths by the 600m mark.
Garry, who was looking to win the race named after his late brother, watched on as Azzopardi pulled his mount off the fence after the home turn.Full story in today's print edition.
