La Fiamma midfielder Joe Italiano said a switch in formation helped the Reds get back in the winner’s circle in Perth on Sunday.
The Geraldton side recorded a well-deserved 3-1 victory over Gosnells City in round nine of the MySolar Sunday League Division Three competition.
Italiano said changing to a 3-5-2 formation was a major factor in the result.
“Changing our formation back suited us nicely, especially with Joe Hodgson and Mathis Wieler back to full strength,” he said.
“I think our biggest improvement for the game was our defence.”
“Our midfield was probably the strongest it had looked in a long time. Simon Moffat, Darrien Anderson and I controlled the middle and Hodgson and Wieler dominated the wings.”
Wieler netted the opening goal of the game early in the first half before the Gosnells equalised five minutes later.
Keegan Roos then volleyed in the Reds’ second goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in the match.
Wieler then put the finishing touches on the victory with his second for the game.
The result places La Fiamma second on the ladder behind Canning City.
Italiano said the Reds were in an ideal position to make a charge through the second half of the season.
“The team drew a lot of confidence from this game and I’m very proud of the boys,” he said.
“I think the two weeks off and the last loss we had got everybody going and we really wanted to win.”
Meanwhile in other soccer news, La Fiamma’s Darren Russell has been suspended for five weeks after his side’s weekend fixture against Chapman Athletic.
He was red carded during Saturday night’s Midwest Soccer Association A-grade game.
