Electronics retailers have criticised the delay of digital TV launches in Geraldton after networks pushed the launch date back.
Both WIN and GWN were originally due to launch standard definition digital channels, as well as a new station TEN West, on New Year’s Eve 2010.
Instead, a $34 million program from the Federal Government to bring a full range of digital channels to the regions has superseded the plan.
Information on the launch however, remains unclear.
The WIN website still lists their launch date for Geraldton and a range of other regional centres as December 31, 2010.
GWN general manager Trevor Sutherland said there had to be a major re-evaluation after Stephen Conroy announced the funding.
“They have to figure out what they’re going to do and how they’re going to do it ... there’s a manufacturing process as well,” he said.
“It’s a pity it’s been delayed a little.”
Mr Sutherland said Geraldton could still expect to go digital in the next six months.
But Mr Sutherland was unable to give a definite start date.
He said while plans already in place had been disrupted, the extra channels would be a bonus, as the full range of digital TV channels, including 7MATE, 7TWO, GO!, ONE and Eleven would be broadcast.
The Good Guys manager Warwick Keenan said the delay was very disappointing.
“Our customers are spending thousands on new, very capable screens and can only enjoy ABC and SBS in digital while WIN and GWN are viewed in the substandard analogue resolution,” he said.
Mitchell and Brown general manager Greg Brown echoed Mr Keenan’s sentiments.
“It is a bit disappointing that we are one of the last places to receive digital,” he said.
