Kalbarri tourist drowns in river

Kalbarri police say they will recommend increased signage to highlight dangers of swimming at the Murchison River after a 39-year-old Taiwanese tourist died last week.

Police said the body of the man was located in waters at the river at 7.15am on Saturday.

Sgt Matt Froude said the man and his 37-year-old female partner, also of Taiwan, were snorkelling at the river on Friday.

He said the woman became fatigued halfway across the river and was rescued by a kayaker and a person in a boat hire dinghy.

The man could not be found and was reported missing at 3.50pm, prompting police to launch a land, sea and air search.
