A flying boat service to the Abrolhos Islands is closer to reality than ever before.
Catalina Airlines, based at Belmont near Perth Airport, brought their Grumman G11 Albatross flying boat to Geraldton on a ‘reconnaissance mission’.
Company CEO Mack McCormack said their goal was to gauge whether the venture would enjoy local support.
There seemed little doubt of that as groups of invited guests were taken on 15 minute flights in the 24-seat flying boat.
Built for the US Navy to replace the Catalina flying boats of WWII, a squadron of which were based at Geraldton, it was retired in 1975 and later rebuilt and “civilianised”, with a plush interior the USN fliers would have envied.Full story in today's print edition.
