A “two-race package” for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race has been accepted by the City of Greater Geraldton council, but not until after some councillors expressed misgivings about its economic value to the City.
A 12-3 vote on Tuesday endorsed a proposal whereby the City would provide $400,000 over the next four years to sponsor the 2013-14 and the 2015-16 races and seek a further $1.1 million from Eventscorp.
This money would go to Clipper in return for yacht naming rights and a range of international promotional activities.
The City would also budget $50,000 for “host city” obligations in each of the two years when Geraldton stopovers occur.
The executive officers’ recommendation was successfully moved by Cr Bob Hall, who said the race stopovers in 2009 and 2011 raised the international profile of Geraldton, benefited suppliers and drew large numbers of visitors to the City.Full story in today's print edition.
