A motion for extensive public consultation over deregulated retail trading hours in Geraldton was endorsed by the city council with a 10-4 vote on Tuesday.
Cr Ron Ashplant successfully moved that council give notice of its intention to seek ministerial consent for deregulation after a 90-day public consultation period starting next month.
The motion also called for a survey on the issue to include all members of the Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
A subsequent motion from Cr Chris Gabelish specifically invited sporting groups and voluntary organisations to participate in the consultation process.
This arose from comments at the meeting that deregulated Sunday trading could lead to many more young people being hired as casual staff, and concerns about its likely impact on sporting and other traditional weekend family activities.
