Despite operations being disrupted by cyclones Bianca and Carlos and torrential flooding in December, Dampier Salt’s Lake Macleod mine shipped a record tonnage last month.

October, more than 1.3 million tonnes were shipped out of the State from Dampier Salt’s three operations in Western Australia, according to the company’s managing director Denise Goldsworthy.

“The previous record was reached in December 2009, when 1.145 million tonnes was shipped,” she said.

“Lake Macleod operations achieved a monthly shipping record of 564, 948 tonnes for October.”

Dampier Salt operations manager Alan Perry said the market was favourable for salt at the moment.

Mr Perry said he had high hopes for the company wanting to expand the Lake Macleod operation even further.

“I want to see the Lake Macleod operation grow to be the largest producer of salt in the world by 2015,” he said.

“(A record month) is amazing for a company that was affected by weather events earlier in the year.

“It couldn’t have been done without everybody’s contribution.”

Mr Perry said he was not worried about the recent economic downturn.

“I foresee the demand continuing for the rest of the year,” he said.
