Environment writer and general sunburnt Englishman-about-town Michael Hopkin came to The West Australian after almost a decade at the international science magazine Nature, where he specialised in a range of issues including climate change and conservation.
Perhaps ironically given the carbon emissions involved, his environmental reporting has taken him around the world – to the Arctic Circle, the heart of Africa, and plenty of places in between – regularly travelling enormous distances being the perfect preparation for living in WA.
He is a past winner of the Association of British Science Writers’ online journalism award for his reporting on the discovery of the prehistoric “Hobbits” on the Indonesian island of Flores – known chiefly to Perthlings for being quite near Bali. A committed bike commuter during his London days, he insists on maintaining the practice in Perth, regardless of distance, temperature, and his resulting appearance on arrival.
