Kununurra ambos put out call for help

St John Ambulance Kununurra is set to launch a volunteer recruitment drive, starting with a Wednesday evening open house at the sub-centre.

The branch is one of the busiest regional centres in the State, a pace reflected in it becoming a career station last year, with a second full-time paramedic appointed subsequently.

Prior to the change, the centre had relied more on a strong base of volunteers and will now look to again boost its numbers.

Paramedic Cameron Fidock said Kununurra had a group of hard-working volunteers but the centre was seeking extra numbers to bolster the work they did alongside full-time paramedics.

"Being a transient population we are also looking to replace people who have left for whatever reason, and keep our numbers at a good level," he said.

"We do need that large workforce to draw upon when we need to."

Mr Fidock said the open day would be a chance for people to have a look around the centre and speak to paramedics and volunteers about what it was like to be a volunteer.

"That will give them a lowdown on what to expect, what sort of help you will get and the rewards you will draw from volunteering with St Johns. There are a couple of requirements: you have to have your driver's licence and you can't be on a P-plate," he said.

"We can take you beforehand but you won't be able to drive.

"You also need to be relatively fit and healthy, so there is a medical component."

The recruitment drive will kick off with a stall at the Coles complex on Saturday morning to advertise the open day which will be held from 6pm on Wednesday at the sub-centre.

A free barbecue, short presentation and tours of the sub-centre will all be part of the event.
