A man's severely decomposed body has been found on a traffic island in Cairns.
Police say a woman crossing a street in the suburb of Bungalow came across the body lying in bushes on Tuesday morning.
District duty officer John Rhodes said it was likely the body had been there since late last week and was severely decomposed.
The man is yet to be identified, although reports suggest the body is of a 40-year-old itinerant man, according to Rhodes.
The death is not being treated as suspicious.
"At this stage there doesn't appear to be any suspicious circumstances," Rhodes said.
"There are no signs of violence and no signs of trauma but we will continue to investigate until we've established beyond doubt that it didn't involve violence or any other type of misadventure."
A top detective also said the death was odd but not suspicious.
"Locals are not the sort to turn a blind eye,'' Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar said.
"We'll wait to get back the pathology report but it looks like he'd had a fair bit to drink, tucked himself into the bushes and didn't wake up."
