After selling the only known remaining James Bond Aston Martin movie car for $4.7 million in October, Canadian auction house RM is set to auction 11 highly desirable Ferraris on January 20-21.
The star of the Arizona sale will undoubtedly be a 1949 Ferrari 166 MM Touring Barchetta, which is the 10th of just 25 made.
According to RM, the 2.0-litre, V12-powered car was first raced in the 1950 Mar del Plata road race in Argentina, finishing first overall.
The car was also campaigned in the 1951 Mille Miglia, where it was driven by female driver Aprile Palmer, who bought the car shortly afterwards.
RM chairman Rob Myers said the 166 MM was "arguably one of the most meticulously documented Ferraris we have ever had the pleasure of offering".
Given the quality and rarity of the Ferraris RM has sold previously, that statement carries some weight. An estimated price for the car has not been released.
Among the other Ferraris on offer at the sale are a 1973 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder (estimated to sell for up to $1 million), a 1966 Superfast Series I ($1.1 million) and the 1995 F50 show car that was used to introduce the Ferrari F50 to the world ($800,000).
There are also some special muscle cars in the sale, including a 1964 Dodge Hemi Charger Concept Car, which RM claims is likely to be the most important hemi-powered car in existence ($1 million). A genuine 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra has also been estimated to sell for up to $750,000.
Idle Torque is all about enjoying old technology but not in the 1984 Apple Macintosh computer or brown linoleum kind of way.
Without doubt, there are people who do enjoy these things and they probably have their own devoted clubs, but this column is more about the fun that can be had doing such things as driving along the freeway in a 1940s sports car with the windscreen down.
There's also the satisfaction that comes from doing that when the car has been restored from a wreck found in a paddock with a mature eucalyptus growing through the floor.
Then there is the pleasure taken in enjoying these cars at every opportunity - driving them to work and getting there knowing you've really had to operate that piece of machinery to do so. But on a 39C day, it can also be a relief to get in a modern car with dual- zone climate control.
