The light commercial sector has seen a boom in sales in 2013 so far this year, with February's VFACTS figures showing one-tonne utes making up three of the top five selling vehicles in the country for the month, and taking out the top two spots in WA.
Though the Toyota HiLux is a mainstay at the top of monthly and annual sales lists, also nestled among the usual Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla suspects in the national sales list are the 4x4 variants of the Nissan Navara (fourth overall) and Mitsubishi Triton (sixth).
When 4x2 sales are added, the HiLux moves into second spot with 3319 sales, the Triton moves up to fifth place (2335) and the Ford Ranger breaks into the top 10 to take up seventh position (1739).
In WA, those same four light commercials all cracked the top 10 for the month without even considering 4x2 sales, with the HiLux and Navara sitting atop of the pile.
Strong Navara sales have helped Nissan get off to a great start this year.
The Japanese maker even knocked Holden out of the top three for company sales in February, though Holden has attributed part of its dip in sales to a computer error which disconnected its factory from its dealer network.
Overall sales for the year so far are up 8 per cent on last year, putting the market on track to break last year's record of over 1,112,000 sales.
The 4x4 light commercial sector as a whole has particularly grown the past year. National February sales were up 45 per cent compared to last year, and made up 13.7 per cent of all sales.
The segment has been even more buoyant in resources-rich WA in 2013 so far. Sales of 4x4s have jumped 60 per cent in the opening two months of the year compared to last, and made up 17.2 per cent of all sales in February.
Sales of medium and large passenger cars continue to slump with the two segments accounting for less than 10 per cent of all sales so far this year, down from over 14 per cent after two months of sales last year.
Light and small passenger cars remain the most popular across the country, while small, medium and large SUV sales are all also up on last year.
