Hyundai has showcased its luxury car credentials with the revealing of its HCD-14 Genesis concept at the Detroit Auto Show, and the company has hinted at a further push into the global luxury car market that could also extend to Australia in years to come.
Though it hasn't yet entered the top-end sector in Australia, Hyundai has reported significant growth in sales of its luxury Genesis and Equus models in the US, China and the Middle East.
The Korean manufacturer has already confirmed the next- generation, non-luxury Genesis Coupe will be made with right-hand-drive and make it to Australia when it goes into production in a few years time, which will combine with the Veloster range to bolster Hyundai's presence in the sports car sector.
Hyundai Australia general manager of public relations Bill Thomas said a move into the luxury market was on the radar but far from confirmed.
"As with all new vehicles we will continue to conduct extensive local market evaluation and feasibility, which includes Hyundai's premium model offerings such as the Genesis sedan and Equus," he said.
The HCD-14 Genesis concept has a classic sport saloon shape, with rear-hinged rear doors being its most striking feature.
Inside, gemstone-like design surfaces and milled-wood detailing aim to deliver what Hyundai calls a "fresh, topographical map-like visual interest" to the cabin.
Form and style are valued over clusters of buttons and switches - an approach the interior can afford to have due to the technological innovations on offer.
In order to allow the driver's eyes to stay on the road longer, the HCD-14 concept features eye tracking and 3-D hand gesture recognition, meaning certain gestures, eye movements and thumb controls are used to select various functions such as navigation, infotainment and smart-phone connectivity.
The car uses optical recognition technology to identify the driver and start the engine.It has an eight-speed automatic transmission while, under the bonnet, the HCD-14 has a 5.0-litre V8 with dual continuously variable valve timing which provides ample power with good fuel economy and lower emissions.
