Mazda has released images of its new-look CX-9 ahead of its world premiere at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney next month.

The front-end of the large SUV has been redesigned to match the newer CX-5 and upcoming Mazda6 medium sedan, adopting what Mazda calls its "Kodo - Soul of Motion" design.

The seven-seater has new headlights, grille and bumper, and Mazda says there have also been changes made to the rear-end design but they are being kept under wraps, at least for now. Some changes have also been made to the interior, with upgraded stereo and navigation systems.

Mazda will also add new safety features, including Forward Obstruction Warning (a collision warning system), Lane Departure Warning and High Beam Control. No changes have been made to the 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine or six-speed automatic transmission.

The new model is expected to go on sale by the end of the year.
