The North American car maker sold a record 501 new-generation Grand Cherokees last month to finish well ahead of its competition, including the Audi Q5; BMW X1, X3 and X5; Mercedes-Benz M Class and Land Rover Discovery.

The Q5 was the Cherokee's nearest rival, with 210 sales.

Year-to-date, the Q5 leads the Luxury SUV pack with 1930 sales, ahead of the X5 (1795), the Grand Cherokee (1557), X1 (1521), M Class (1448) and Discovery (1418).

Sales of luxury SUVs are up 20 per cent in the first eight months of the year, bucking the overall trend that sees passenger car sales down 4.4 per cent compared with the same time last year.
