What looks like a potato but tastes like an apple? The weird and wonderful yacon.
Yacon, or the Peruvian ground apple (Smallanthus sonchifolius), is something more than a bit different but this incredible plant native to the Andes has an incredible tuberous root system.
I was introduced to it thanks to my friends the Franzinellis at Jetto's Patch in Maida Vale.
We have just enjoyed our first tubers and I have to say it's incredible. The root looks like a sweet potato and tastes crunchy, crisp and refreshing just like a sweet apple, but it has floral flavours to it like a viola nectar, which makes it an absolute treat in a salad.
Short of begging Michele Franzinelli for a cutting you might want to beg Joe Tassone for a plant at Tass 1 Trees in Baskerville. He has about 20 plants in stock, otherwise you could try a mail-order company such as The Diggers Club or Garden Express.
Believe me, this is one weird and wonderful vegetable you want to grow in your vegie garden.
