With Christmas coming soon, it's time to start thinking about getting your garden and entertaining areas looking great.
Plant waterwise flowering annuals such as vincas, petunias and marigolds — they should go into your garden now so they produce masses of colour in time for Christmas.
Citrus in small spaces
This is the perfect time to plant citrus trees and they are great for small or large areas.
If you have a courtyard I recommend you look for trees grown on the dwarfing root stock known as Flying Dragon. This delivers trees no bigger than 1.8m tall with a similar width, but they still produce large quantities of fruit.
They are perfect for pots — a half wine barrel filled with a good potting mix is ideal.
Sweet smell of summer
Flowering plants such as gardenias, azaleas, magnolias and fragrant plants such as the port wine magnolia, sweet olive, osmanthus and mock orange should all be planted now. The most important thing is to plant them into a humus-rich soil and apply a 100mm layer of chunky mulch.
They also require a good irrigation system that ensures the soil never dries out. If you achieve this they will grow fast and produce sweetly scented flowers in late summer and autumn.
