Audi has released details of its new high-performance coupe, the RS5, due in Australia towards the end of the year.

The coupe will become the range-topping model of the German car maker's A5 range and is a rival for BMW's M3 coupe.

It is powered by the high-revving 4.2-litre V8 already used in the S8 super saloon but power rises to 331kW at 8250rpm.

Between 4000-6000rpm 430 Newton metres of torque are available. Fuel economy has been kept at a very respectable 10.8L/100km.

Power is delivered to the ground through all four wheels via the quattro drivetrain's seven-speed S-tronic transmission and centre differential.

The transmission can be used as an automatic or a manual. Using standard drive select, the driver is able to choose one of three options - auto, comfort, and dynamic.

In the launch-control program, the transmission ensures flawless acceleration from a standstill - at full power and with minimal tyre spin.

The RS5 accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.6sec. and has a top speed of 280km/h. A rear spoiler deploys automatically above 120km/h for improved high-speed stability. The spoiler retracts below 80km/h.

The new coupe is clearly distinguished from the S5 by its black honeycomb one-piece grille, deeper front air intakes, five-spoke alloy wheels, dual exhaust pipes and RS badging.

Buyers will have the choice of three front-seat styles, ranging from comfort to racing-focused.

Audi intends to offer a Carbon design package for the engine compartment.

For the body, styling packages in black or a matt aluminium look will be available.
