New view of Sunday morning

They are not wowsers, naysayers or on their high horse but these three Perth residents are on a mission to transform Australia's alcohol culture one drink at a time.

They are all members of Hello Sunday Morning, a non-profit organisation and growing movement that encourages people to give up alcohol for a time - from three months to a year - to help them reassess their relationship with alcohol and spur them towards drinking responsibly.

Ebony Frost, Callum Whiteside and Cameron Barnes are among tens of thousands of people across Australia and the world committing to the movement.

HSM founder and Young Queenslander of the Year Chris Raine gave up alcohol for a year in 2010 after a bad hangover.

Mr Barnes, University of WA guild president and two months into a 12-week HSM, said he hoped to change university culture to be more inclusive of students who did not drink.

"It's different for everyone but I found my confidence was too reliant on alcohol in social situations," he said.

"HSM gives you time for reflection, to think about why you drink alcohol, it forces you to adapt and it empowers you."

Ebony Frost joined HSM when it started in 2010 and did two years of alcohol-free living.

"Some people felt quite threatened by it," she said.

"It was as if my decision not to drink was a judgment on their choice to drink."

Benefits included saving money and improving health.
