Slovakian researchers compared the attractivemess of men before and after shaving their chest and found that just 20 per cent of women preferred the hirsute version.
According to the UK's Daily Mail, 80 per cent of women prefer relatively hair-free men, as reported in new research published online in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior.
However researchers admit they do not know why and have discounted previous theories that hairless men are less likely to carry parasites and bugs and women subconsciously avoid hairy men.
The team now plan to repeat the research in other countries to find out if cultural differences influence the reaction.Previous research has found that women in the women in China, New Zealand and California went for a bare look, while some in Cameroon prefer hairier men.
